Solothurn’s old town is unusually intact and unusually ornate, and that changes what a plate has to do. Against a plain 1960s wall a plate needs to be visible; against a baroque doorway with mouldings and a painted surround it needs to be quiet, or it competes and loses. We size down rather than up here, we skip decorative borders entirely — the facade supplies all the ornament required — and we let the engraving carry the whole design.

Look at the doorway. If the stone and paintwork are visibly old, antiqued. If the entrance has been renovated recently, polished will not jar. Send us the photograph and we will say which we would fit.
