Two-tone plastic
Two coloured layers bonded together: engrave the top one away and the second colour appears. It is how most workshop, locker and machine labels in Switzerland are made, and there is no cheaper way to get a legible plate.
How it ages in Switzerland
Indoors it is stable and effectively maintenance-free. Outdoors, colours shift — reds and blues first, within two or three summers — and the laminate can lift at the edges if water gets between the layers. It is the least expensive material to replace, which is part of the point: for a rented workshop or a temporary office layout, a plate that costs a few francs and gets redone when the tenant changes makes more sense than brass. Do not use it where a plaque needs to say permanence.

Think twice if the plaque carries a name at a front door — plastic is read as temporary, whatever the engraving quality.

Two to five years before colours visibly shift. Indoors, far longer than you will want to keep the same label.
